Phong Nha is one of the two most gigantic limestone mountains in the world with a density of more than 300 large and small-large caves. It is previously known as the "Cave Kingdom," which contains the magnificent beauty of rock creation. More impressively, the system of underground rivers features hundreds of rare and precious fauna and flora species, many of which are named in the Vietnam Red Book. Phong Nha cave is a world paradise for not only scientists but also adventurers who would love to conquer nature. 

Weather

Phong Nha is a part of Quang Binh Province, a part of the tropical monsoon climate region with two distinct seasons. The dry season starts from April to August when the temperature outside can reach more than 40 degrees. But it’s always comfortable inside with temperature below 25 degrees. During the wet rainy season from September to March next year, the underground water level in some caves is too high for visitors to go inside.

How To Get There

Phong Nha belongs to Bo Trach district, Quang Binh province. Traveling from Dong Hoi city to Phong Nha, it covers a distance of 50 km. On the other hand, Dong Hoi is a transport hub in Central Vietnam. From Noi Bai or Tan Son Nhat International Airport, direct flights take less than two hours. You can also catch a train or a bus to this city but the travel time is up to 12 hours.

Phong Nha Cave

Among all the caves of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, Phong Nha is the most convenient stop for tourists to visit. After 30 minutes of cruising on the Son River, tourists will be taken to Phong Nha cave. With a length of nearly 8km, Phong Nha is one of the longest water caves in the world; this is also the only cave with the underground river in Vietnam to being exploited for tourism.

 

 

 

 

 

Tien Son Cave

Tien Son Cave or Dry Cave is renowned as an exceptional beautiful cave in Phong Nha-Ke Bang area. The entrance to Tien Son cave is located about 1,000 m away from the Phong Nha cave entrance, at an altitude of approximately 200 m. Tien Son Cave has a length of 980m. It is home to the spectacular stalactites and stalagmites like in Phong Nha cave. But it is characterized by the sounds created when the air and the water coming through the rocks and stone pillars making the echoes like gongs and drumbeat.

 

 

 

Thien Duong Cave (Paradise Cave)

Thien Duong Cave was discovered in 2005 by the British Royal Caving Research Association. The determined length is around 31 km. Due to the beauty of the cave, it was named Paradise (Thien Duong in Vietnamese). This is a dry cave with no underground river flowing through. The incredible feature of Paradise Cave is a multitude of stalactites and stalagmites in different shapes and sizes.

 

 

 

 

 

Son Doong Cave

Son Doong cave used to be hidden in Tan Trach commune, Bo Trach district, Quang Binh province. It is considered the most significant natural cave in the world since the British Royal Caving Research Association discovered it in 2009. Son Doong Cave is part of an underground system connecting more than 150 other caves in Vietnam close to the border with Laos.

The area around Phong Nha contains many ethnic, cultural values, including the village culture of Vietnamese communities in the vicinity of Phong Nha - Ke Bang. They feature a wide range of traditional festival to pray for prosperity and safety. There are also plenty of temple relics, religious monuments inside the caves to carry out spiritual activities.

Best Time To Visit

Due to the weather characteristics of 2 opposite seasons, the best time for Phong Nha adventures is in the dry season from April to August.
